Sometimes you listen to a song for the very first time and you suddenly feel and think (or think and feel?): that’s it! Sometimes you even say it out loud as if you had won the lottery or something (at least it happens to me who keep talking to my bottoms all the time).
Those who kindly read me may be already wondering what does my “that’s it!” mean. Well… Lots of things in fact. The song seems to have been written / composed for you. It is your mirror, sometimes the expression of your most secret feelings, the ones you don’t even dare to admit lodging inside. Other times it simply portrays your moods at a certain point of our life. But some other times your ‘all-of-a-sudden-beloved-song’ is the expression of your soul, your self and remains kind of a personal “hymn” so to “write”.
The most incredible thing is when this “miracle” (if there’s such a thing, this is one for sure) happens with songs whose language you don’t even understand. In this case I’m not referring to instrumental music, naturally. This one has the advantage of being more universal, but doesn’t join words (lyrics- quite often pure poetry!) with music, two different but rather complementary types of expression. I’d even dare to say they were born for each other!
I discovered “Wonder” by “The Swerve” early this year and I fell in love with it immediately. “Love at first ear”, ha?! (Pardon my English, I’m trying to be fun, but maybe I’m not getting there… Writing in English what I could say in Portuguese may not sound how I wished it to and not fun at all…)
And while listening to “wonder” I felt that “that’s it!”, the same that came to me when I first listened to “Roads” by Portishead, for instance. (Both bands have lots of similarities as a matter of fact!)
I kind of heard that click inside that whispers you ‘this is the song of the moment’. Then I went through the lyrics and realised it was not just the moment song. It was a lot more than that. A lot more!
Lyrics:
Wonder
I saw you in a dream
You came to me and asked
Where I had been
I see you in a world
Beyond my own
I feel you next to me
I don’t know why
I never knew that
You were there
You make me wonder what’s inside of you
Wondering how much time we’ll have
Wondering how long this can last
Feeling the movement of this place we’re in
I lost you in my fears
I don’t know why
I never knew how
Close you were
It makes me wonder what’s in store for us
Wondering how much time we’ll have
Wondering how long this can last
Feeling the movement of this place we’re in
